𝟏) 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝟔𝟖𝟏 𝐀𝐃. It has had a continuous existence as a nation-state for over 1,300 years.

𝟐) 𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞. Even though the country has been under Byzantine and Ottoman rule throughout its history, the name Bulgaria has been used for over 1,300 years.

𝟑) 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐞𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐈𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐜𝐞. The country plays a vital role in Europe’s historical narrative, providing valuable knowledge about ancient civilizations, cultural interactions, and artistic achievements.

𝟒) 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐍𝐞𝐯𝐬𝐤𝐢 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐒𝐥𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐜 𝐎𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐱 𝐜𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝. The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is a testimony to Bulgaria’s historical and cultural heritage, representing the country’s war for freedom as well as its deep-rooted Orthodox Christian traditions.

𝟓) 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐚 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞.

𝟔) 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐠𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐕𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐚, 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚. In 1972, almost 300 graves were discovered in a necropolis in the coastal city’s industrial zone. The artifacts are dated back to 4600 – 4200 BC. The treasure consists of a total of 3,000 items and weighs 6 kg / 13.23 lbs.

𝟕) 𝐏𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐝𝐢𝐯 𝐢𝐬 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞’𝐬 𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲. Settlements in the area date back to the Neolithic period, with evidence of human presence from around 6,000 BC. Throughout its long history, Plovdiv has been inhabited by Thracians, Romans, Byzantines, Bulgarians, and Ottomans, each leaving their mark on the city’s culture, architecture, and heritage.

𝟖) 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐝𝐢𝐯 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭-𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝. The attraction is located in the city’s Old Town. The arena dates back to the 1st century AD and is still used today. It can host up to 7,000 spectators.

𝟏𝟐) 𝐀𝐥𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐞-𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐬.

𝟏𝟑) 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐢𝐫 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐢𝐫-𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐨𝐦𝐛 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲. That was during the First Balkan War, the bomb was used on 16 October 1912.

𝟏𝟒) 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐚𝐧 𝐏𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐚 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐚 𝐏𝐞𝐚𝐤. It’s located in Rila Mountain, Bulgaria, rising at 2925m above sea level.

𝟏𝟓) 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐱𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐟 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝’𝐬 𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐢𝐥.

𝟏𝟔) 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐠𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝. The Lactobacillus bulgaricus, which gives the unique taste of yoghurt can be found only in Bulgaria.

𝟏𝟕) 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬. The country boasts more than 700 mineral springs, each with its own unique mineral composition and therapeutic properties.

𝟏𝟗) 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧’𝐬 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐣𝐮𝐦𝐩 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐟𝐤𝐚 𝐊𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚. At the 1987 World Championship in Rome, she jumped the sensational 2.09 m (6.86 ft.) In the last 37 years, no other female athlete has even matched her exceptional achievement.

𝟐𝟎) 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐬𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬.

𝟐𝟏) 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐎𝐭𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝟓𝟎𝟎 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬. Strong traditions, literature, spirituality, unity and the Christian faith preserved the Bulgarian spirit throughout the time of slavery. For 100 years, the Bulgarians organized liberation movements with the aim of restoring the Bulgarian state and liberation from Ottoman rule. With help from Russia, Bulgaria gained its independence at the end of the Russo-Turkish War 1877-1878.

𝟐𝟐) 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧. It’s the only official language of the country. This fact comes as a surprise to many foreigners. After almost five centuries under the Ottoman Empire’s rule, Bulgaria gained its independence in 1908. Despite the different religions, traditions, and languages of Bulgarians and Ottomans, the Bulgarian spirit and language survived.

𝟐𝟑) 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝟏𝟒𝟐 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚 – 𝟐𝟔 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬, 𝟓𝟔 𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝟓𝟖 𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐧𝐞𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬.

𝟐𝟒) 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚’𝐬 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐥𝐜𝐨𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐢𝐬 𝐫𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐚. The fiery beverage is a fruit brandy. Usually, it’s made out of grapes, but other variations incorporate plums, apricots, pears, or figs.

𝟐𝟓) 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝟏𝟑𝟎 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐲. These monasteries are scattered throughout various regions of Bulgaria, including the Rila Mountains, the Rhodope Mountains, the Pirin Mountains, and the Balkan Mountains.

𝟐𝟔) 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐬.

𝟐𝟖) 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐠 “𝐈𝐳𝐥𝐞𝐥 𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐲𝐨 𝐇𝐚𝐢𝐝𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐧”, 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐚 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐤𝐚, 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐛𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐞 “𝐕𝐨𝐲𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝟏” 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐦𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧 𝐜𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬.

𝟐𝟗) 𝐀 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬. Nestinarstvo is one of Bulgaria’s oldest and most fascinating traditions that is still practiced in modern times. Rooted in paganism, nestinarstvo is believed to be a pagan ritual in which dancers walk across embers.

𝟑𝟎) 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝, 𝐢𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚, 𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐬 “𝐧𝐨”; 𝐢𝐟 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐞𝐟𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭, 𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐬 “𝐲𝐞𝐬.”.

𝟑𝟏) 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝 “𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐬𝐚”. Banitsa is a traditional Bulgarian pastry made from thin layers of filo dough filled with various ingredients. The most common filling consists of a mixture of whisked eggs and Bulgarian white cheese called “sirene”.
