ESOL & Family Learning
Bridge the Language Gap: Empowering Families in Edmonton
Building Bridges: Empowering Edmonton’s Diverse Communities
Edmonton is wonderfully rich with diverse cultures and communities. However, new arrivals who don’t speak English as their first language sometimes face significant hurdles with social integration. That’s where our project steps in! ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) courses are designed to boost English speaking skills, while Family Learning helps parents keep pace with their children’s studies.
Our consultations with Edmonton schools revealed a clear need: 78% of parents weren’t confident speaking English, and 76% expressed interest in attending ESOL classes at their local school. When non-English speakers arrive in a new country, they can feel socially isolated and often struggle to access the support they’re entitled to, due to language barriers and a lack of confidence in integrating with the local community.
Our Accessible Learning Opportunities
To address these challenges, we’ve subsidised several crucial courses available through Barnet and Southgate College, making them much more accessible to our community. These important courses include:
- ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)
- Paediatric First Aid
- Keeping Up With The Children (English & Maths)
These programmes are now available to more parents and families, truly supporting them as they learn and thrive in our vibrant community.
